Jake Reynolds: Against the Tide

Jake Reynolds is caught in a stormy sea of friendship. He’d like to hang out with Emily but her city friend wants nothing to do with him. Ryan, a new boy on the island, appeals to Jake’s sense of adventure. But his idea of fun—throwing jellyfish, catching snakes and climbing the off-limits sandbank—puts Jake at odds with Emily and himself. Will he be able to sort things out before the tide comes in?

This is a solid short novel for readers moving beyond chapter books. Multidimensional characters deals authentically with friendship issues. There is enough tension and action to keep readers engaged. I really liked how supportive the adults are and that even the troubled kid seems to find a redemption of sorts.
Now I'll have to go and read the first in this series.—Cheriee Weichel, Goodreads. 4 Stars
