Penguin Days

Penguin Days

Join Lauren for another adventure as she travels to North Dakota to attend a family wedding. In her own unique way she deals with the challenges of scratchy flower girl dresses, rambunctious cousins, and cows on the loose. Lauren’s Autism Spectrum Disorder means she sees the world differently from other kids. What makes her comfortable are her routines and coping mechanisms for her anxiety. So it’s no surprise that she flips her lid more than once. But while having an extended family seems like a lot of trouble at first, Lauren is about to learn how much they can care for one another.

Penguin Days. Written by Sara Leach, illustrated by Rebecca Bender. Pajama Press, 2018.

A Bank Street Best Book

“Another fine and enlightening peek into Lauren’s unique, often challenging world that displays her differences but highlights the needs she shares with all children: love, acceptance and friendship.” Kirkus Reviews

“While she faces particular challenges, Lauren’s misadventures (dealing with loud relatives, letting calves out of their stall, throwing up on her flower girl dress) could have happened to any girl. Other kids will enjoy reading about them from her point of view.”
Booklist

“Honest and descriptive…in Penguin Days, Lauren’s family learns to accept one another, no matter how challenging a situation might seem.”
